Crack growth in polyconvex materials∗

چکیده
We discuss a model for crack propagation in an elastic body, where the crack path is described a-priori. In particular, we develop in the framework of finitestrain elasticity a rate-independent model for crack evolution which is based on the Griffith fracture criterion. Due to the nonuniqueness of minimizing deformations, the energy-release rate is no longer continuous with respect to time and the position of the crack tip. Thus, the model is formulated in terms of the Clarke differential of the energy, generalizing the classical crack evolution models for elasticity with strictly convex energies. We prove the existence of solutions for our model and also the existence of special solutions, where only certain extremal points of the Clarke differential are allowed.

Propagation of Crack in Linear Elastic Materials with Considering Crack Path Correction Factor
Modeling of crack propagation by a finite element method under mixed mode conditions is of prime importance in the fracture mechanics. This article describes an application of finite element method to the analysis of mixed mode crack growth in linear elastic fracture mechanics. Crack - growth process is simulated by an incremental crack-extension analysis based on the maximum principal stress c...
متن کاملMechanics and mechanisms of fatigue damage and crack growth in advanced materials
The mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation in ceramics and intermetallics are examined through a comparison of cyclic crack-growth behavior in ductile and brittle materials. Crack growth is considered to be a mutual competition between intrinsic mechanisms of crack advance ahead of the crack tip, which promote crack growth, and extrinsic mechanisms of crack-tip shielding behind the tip, which ...
متن کاملCHARACTERIZATION OF TRANSVERSE CRACK AND CRACK GROWTH IN A RAILWAY RAIL
Abstract: To ensure the rail transportations safety, evaluation of fatigue behavior of the rail steel is necessary. High cycle fatigue behaviour of a rail steel was the subject of investigation in this research using fracture mechanics. Finite element method (FEM) was used for analyzing the distribution of the stresses on the rail, exerted by the external load. FEM analysis showed that the ...
متن کاملModeling of Corrosion-Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Based on Least Square Support Vector Machine Technique
Understanding crack growth behavior in engineering components subjected to cyclic fatigue loadings is necessary for design and maintenance purpose. Fatigue crack growth (FCG) rate strongly depends on the applied loading characteristics in a nonlinear manner, and when the mechanical loadings combine with environmental attacks, this dependency will be more complicated. Since, the experimental inv...
متن کاملMICROSTRUCTURE VARIATION EFFECTS ON ROOM TEMPERATURE FATIGUE THRESHOLDS AND CRACK PROPAGATION IN UDIMET 720Li Ni-BASE SUPERALLOY
An assessment of the effects of microstructure on room temperature fatigue threshold and crack propagation behaviour has been carried out on microstructural variants of U720Li, i.e. as-received U720Li, U720Li-LG (large grain variant) and U720Li-LP (large intragranular coherent γ′ variant). Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature using a 20Hz sinusoidal cycling waveform at an Rratio=0...
